The annual Essay Contest is sponsored by Optimist International to give young people the opportunity to write about their own opinions regarding the world in which they live. In addition to developing skills for written expression, participants have the opportunity to win a college scholarship of up to $5000. Participants submit their entries and are judged by the local Club. Winners receive a prize, and are entered in the District and International Contests for Scholarships. Interested students should contact the Optimist Club of Valley Forge for additional instructions and deadline information.

Valley Forge Optimist Scholarships

The Optimist Club of Valley Forge officially sponsors two Optimist International Scholarship Programs for students: an Essay Contest, and an Oratorical Contest. In addition, the Optimist Club of Valley Forge has established the Ted and Judy Lowe Scholarship for Upper Merion High School seniors.

Respect for Law

During the first full week in May, the Optimist Club of Valley Forge inspires respect for law among our local young people! Locally, this program includes a trip for 60-70 Middle School students to tour the Pennsylvania State Capital; a salute to a Policeman, Judge or other outstanding member of the legal community; and Good Government Day for Youth Members with tours of the District Justice Court and Township Building led by these government officials.

Tri-Star Sports Contests

The Optimist Club of Valley Forge focuses on sports skills competitions in basketball, baseball, and bicycle and skateboard safety. These contests are the perfect opportunity for children to have fun while testing their skills. Each skill offers exciting opportunities to promote self-confidence and physical fitness.

Recently, additional sports activities have been added to the calendar. A Junior Olympics gave youth the opportunity to try several track and field events. In cooperation with Major League Baseball, the Optimist Club of Valley Forge sponsored a Pitch, Hit and Run contest to challenge kids in the baseball skills.

Youth Appreciation Week

How do we thank thee? Let us count the ways! The second full week in November, Optimist Clubs recognize local youth for their efforts in the arts, athletics, academics and community service work. Youth Appreciation Week is the Optimist Club’s way to demonstrate our commitment to young people.

Youth Appreciation Week projects are intended to make children feel important and highlight their positive contributions to society. Since 1956, this program has been the occasion to work with youth toward the common goals of education, career development, physical well-being and community service. Youth Appreciation Week strives to encourage a greater exchange of ideas between young people and adults. This is one of the organization’s most popular events, with over 2000 clubs participating.

The Optimist Club of Valley Forge holds our annual youth appreciation banquet for a boy and girl that are Freshmen in the Upper Merion High School. The Middle School staff and administration selects the winners for their Leadership and Cooperative Attitude. This recognition as a Freshman is usually followed by continued success in High School and beyond.

Trout Rodeo

On Opening Day of Trout Season, the Optimist Club sponsors a Trout Rodeo at the Upper Merion Township Building Park. Prize fish are donated by Stony Creek Anglers. Prizes are donated by a local fishing supply store. Bring your children to try out fishing on Saturday April 2, 2011.
